Along with that, industries that spring up around the casino will add to the tax base in the community, said Kings Mountain Mayor Scott Neisler in March. An economic impact study prepared by London & Associates shows the proposed facility could represent a $273 million investment in Cleveland County and, once operational, the facility could. KINGS MOUNTAIN — Federal authorities will allow the Catawba Indian Nation to build a casino in Kings Mountain. On Thursday, the U.S. Department of the Interior agreed to put a piece of land in.

- The Catawba Nation of North Carolina has paid tribute to their Tribe’s history by giving the future resort and casino a name reflecting that.
- The Two Kings Casino Resort will open their doors for phase one of the facility’s opening and its activities beginning in the Summer of 2021.
- Estimates show the resort being able to bring in over $300 million yearly for North Carolina.
KINGS MOUNTAIN, N.C. – The Catawba Nation in North Carolina has been working on constructing a $273 million resort casino business in Kings Mountain near Charlotte and the Tribe has finally named their project.
To honor their Tribal history, they have chosen the name “Two Kings Casino Resort.” One King is in honor of the town itself while the other is for King Hagler, Chief of the Catawba Nation from 1754-1763.
“The name pays tribute to the 18th century Catawba Chief King Hagler and to the city of Kings Mountain, which will be home to the new casino resort. It also symbolizes the unique relationship that the Catawba people have historically had – and will continue to strengthen going forward – with fellow residents of the region,” saidBill Harris, Catawba Chief.
The Two Kings Casino Resort
The Two Kings Casino Resort not only unveiled its name but its logo which fits perfectly with the name. It’s a backdrop of Kings Mountain with a silhouette of King Hagler within it.
The North Carolina casino already has a plan to open in the Summer of 2021 with a number of restaurants, tables games, and 1300 slot machines for gamblers in North Carolina to enjoy.
Further construction will be needed to expand on the resort but the timeline for the casino and eating area should take about a year to build.
The construction on the resort has faced opposition from the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI) who filed a federal case against the Tribe with the Department of Interior when news of the establishment first broke in the beginning of the year.
While the ECBI argues that the Catawba Nation received help from politicians to greenlight the project that should have undergone more thorough investigations before being approved, the case did not move much.
Building this resort has brought in 5,000 jobs for its construction as well as a future 4,000 permanent jobs when it’s all up and running. Not only will they bring in more jobs for the area but they are expected to bring in over $300 million annually from business activities.
A Future Win For Catawba
The Catawba Nation is one of the poorer Tribes in North Carolina and being able to open up the Two Kings Casino Resort will help them immensely. This is one reason why the EBCI and their complaints are not going far as politicians feel for the community.
They understand where the EBCI is coming from but also believe the Catawba are within their rights to construct this establishment and went through the proper channels to do so.
“In addition to celebrating a historic legacy of collaboration, Catawba Two Kings Casino Resort represents a future of positive economic development and jobs – for both the people of the Catawba Nation and residents of Kings Mountain and the area,” said Harris.
By the Summer of 2021, they will be able to provide legal gambling to the good people of North Carolina.
Ron Fritz@ronfritzDecember 14th, 2020 - 04:17pm@ronfritzA Catawba Indian Nation casino planned for North Carolina had a ground-breaking ceremony in mid-July. It now has a tentative date for the first phase of the project.
The tribe, which is based in South Carolina, plans to build and open an “introductory facility” by next fall, according to the Charlotte Observer. Called the “Two Kings Casino Resort in Kings Mountain,” it’s a roughly $300 million, 60,000-square-foot facility located about 35 milies west of Charlotte in Cleveland County.

Tribal Administrator Elizabeth Harris said the facility will have at least 1,300 slot machines, according to the story in The Observer.
The casino is being contested by the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, which owns two casinos in western North Carolina and recently announced it has agreed to an amended compact with Gov. Roy Cooper to allow sports betting to move forward at its Harrah’s Cherokee casinos.
Although the North Carolina sports betting bill was passed in July 2019 by the General Assembly and signed into law by Cooper later that month, the process was delayed for more than a year while an amendment to the gaming compact was worked out between the state and the tribe. The coronavirus pandemic has been cited as one reason for the delay, according to a published report.
The law made in-person wagering legal at the Eastern Band of Cherokee casinos in Cherokee and Murphy. The compact still needs signatures from the governor, secretary of state and attorney general before being sent to the U.S. Department of the Interior’s Bureau of Indian Affairs and a 45-day public comment period needs to be advertised before it can go into effect, according to the Smoky Mountain News.
Kings Mountain Casino Progress
In March, the U.S. Interior department decided to put the Kings Mountain casino land in trust, allowing for the casino to be developed.
In late October, Cooper's administration received a proposal from the Catawbas on how it would run the casino, according to the Associated Press. The draft could become the basis for a gambling compact that lays out the games that would be offered and revenue the state would receive, the report said.
The Observer said Cooper and the tribe have had discussions about a compact.
Record-Breaking Fiscal 2019 for Indian Gaming
The National Indian Gaming Commission reported last week that tribal casinos had record high revenues in the 2019 fiscal year, with gross gaming revenue at an industry-record $34.6 billion. That was an increase of 2.5% over the $33.7 billion recorded in fiscal 2018.
That was possible because casino reporting for the 2019 fiscal year ended before the coronavirus pandemic forced every tribal gaming operation across the nation to temporarily close. The revenue was determined by 522 casinos submitting independently audited financial reports, comprised of 245 federally recognized tribes in 29 states.
Nearly every NIGC region experienced growth with the Oklahoma City region seeing the largest increase of 7.7%.
